Coyotes are in Chicago and are now calling suburban and urban jungles home. It is estimated that there are 2000 coyotes in the downtown area alone. Thriving in the suburbs and now having moved into the city, coyotes in Chicago are running out of space. Scientists have acknowledged the phenomenon that urban coyotes are spreading to virtually every North American metropolitan area. They are increasingly being spotted in the east and in the midwest and in a lot of population centers that have never had to deal with coyotes before.
According to a National Geographic article and new data from coyotes outfitted with Crittercam GPS collars (a National Geographic camera that attaches harmlessly to the animals), the uber-urban coyotes in Chicago “have altered their natural behavior to accommodate living in close quarters with people. Unlike wild coyotes…they are nocturnal, coming out when most people have gone home; have learned to travel and cross busy roads regularly; and maintain huge yet fragmented territories…in some metropolitan areas, such as the Windy City, populations are now so high that no vacancies are left in the suburbs for these highly territorial animals—which means youngsters are being forced to strike out into the only remaining habitat: downtown.”
Because of this large population of coyotes in Chicago, residents are urged to take precautions and be aware of their surroundings when taking their pets out after dark. A small pet can be an easy target, even when leashed. This could be a big problem when it is time for your four legged family member to do its business. A Pack ‘N Piddle can offer peace of mind for pet owners, as well as security for their furry friends when nature calls. Be prepared, get your Pack ‘N Piddle today!
